Q: Why do I need a trainer to learn kettlebells?
A: I want to stress the importance of professional instruction when it comes to kettlebells. With the popularity of kettlebells, a lot of people are learning the basics from DVDs and YouTube. I personally have not seen anyone use kettlebells who learned exclusively from video, but the lifts are definitely more subtle than traditional weight training. I cringe at some of the instruction given on websites, even though the instructions were written by extremely well respected trainers. I always use myself as an example - with my extensive exercise experience, when I first started using kettlebells, I sustained some VERY nasty bumps and bruises. I cannot imagine what would happen to a person with less experience!
Q: What kettlebell weight range is recommend for women and men?
A: Women - 8 or 12 kg and men - 16 kg. Anything lighter I would NOT recommend as it is necessary to have a bell heavy enough to engage the hamstrings and glutes during the swing, the most basic kettlebell exercise. Unfortunately there are a lot of companies producing small bells of 5 and 10 pounds, which would be OK for grinds (pressing exercises) but totally inappropriate for swings.
